How BLE Communication Works?

Bluetooth Low Energy (or Bluetooth LE, or Bluetooth Smart) is the power- and application-friendly version of Bluetooth that was built for the Internet of Things (IoT) devices. The main focus in BLE is low energy consumption which is achieved through Faster Connections and Lower Standby Time.

BLE communication consists of two main components: Advertising and Connecting. BLE Advertising is a one-way communication method. Devices that want to be discovered transmit packets of data in set intervals. On the other hand, there are listening devices (smart phones) scanning other devices; receiving and processing advertising packets and filtering them.

The device which advertises is called a Bluetooth Peripheral whereas the one doing the scanning is a Bluetooth Central device.

After a device is discovered, a connection is established. It is now possible to read the services that a Bluetooth Low Energy device offers, and for each service its characteristics (Implementation of a GATT profile). Each characteristic provides some value, which can be read, written, or both.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Bluetooth Low Energy is a type of wireless communication designed especially for short-range communication. BLE lets devices communicate with each other.

The BLE Send block transmits data or instructions from your mobile device to a nearby device using the Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) protocol.
A BLE device scans and detects nearby BLE devices and determines their available services. After scanning, a BLE device operating in the central mode can connect to any of the discovered BLE devices.
You can specify your own or custom services and characteristics using your UUIDs for the service and characteristics.

The process to send data from mobile to BLE devices:

1) Scan all BLE device from Mobile device
2) Connect to a selected BLE device
3) Discover services on the connected peripheral
4) Discover characteristics on the services of interest on the peripheral
5) Read, write or notify values From mobile to BLE devices
6) Disconnect when connection no longer needed

Beacons broadcast out an identifier. It is a unique ID number recognized by your smartphone as unique to the beacon. Once the connection is established, the beacon will perform the specific intended function.

Most smartphones and tablets today support BLE technology.
